1. The Challenge (Context)
Access to inclusive and quality education remains a critical barrier for children in rural Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Inadequate school infrastructure, a widening digital divide, and limited learning resources often lead to poor academic outcomes and high dropout rates. For marginalized communities, education is the only pathway out of poverty, yet the bridge to get there is often broke.
2. Our Strategic Intervention
REAL works to strengthen the public education system. We do not just build classrooms; we create “Learning Ecosystems.” Our approach integrates physical infrastructure upgrades with digital literacy, STEM learning, and remedial support to ensure every child—regardless of gender or background—can thrive.
3. Key Programs & Initiatives
A. The “Model School” Initiative
Supported by Plan India & Eaton
We transform government schools into centers of excellence. By adhering to Right to Education (RtE) standards, we upgrade physical spaces and soft skills simultaneously.
• Intervention: Establishment of Child-Friendly Classrooms, Science Labs, and Libraries.
• Focus: Remedial education for slow learners and Career Counselling for high school students (9th-12th std).
• Scale: Successfully demonstrated in 10 Government/Aided schools across 30 villages in Puducherry.
B. Dynamic Learning through Technology (NDLCs)
Supported by Plan India & DXC Technology
To bridge the digital gap, REAL established a Central Digital Learning Hub and 20 Networked Digital Learning Centres (NDLCs) across Chennai.
• Focus: Providing school-going adolescent girls and young women with access to digital tools, soft skills training, and STEM education.
• Outcome: A safe space for girls to learn, reference, and share knowledge, moving them from digital exclusion to digital empowerment.
C. Comprehensive School Improvement
Supported by Royal Enfield
Located in the Nallur Block (Cuddalore District), this project targets the holistic development of four government schools.
• Scope: Creating secure infrastructure (compound walls, safe floors) and integrating “Supplementary Coaching Centres” to boost academic performance in rural villages.
