Origins of REAL (1989): The Beginning of a People-Led Movement REAL was founded in 1989 by Mr. A. Lawrence in Ennayiram Village at a time when rural communities faced deep-rooted challenges of illiteracy, social exclusion, and economic insecurity. What began as a small, non-formal literacy initiative was driven by a strong belief that education is the first step toward dignity, awareness, and self-determination.
From its earliest days, REAL worked closely with marginalized families, focusing on community participation rather than top-down intervention. Literacy programs became spaces for dialogue, confidence-building, and collective thinking—especially for women, who were often excluded from decision-making processes. This early emphasis on inclusion helped communities recognize their own potential to shape change.
As trust grew, REAL’s work naturally expanded beyond education into women’s collectives, livelihood support, and grassroots mobilization, laying a strong foundation for long-term rural development. The organization’s approach was simple yet powerful: sustainable progress must be locally rooted, people-driven, and responsive to real needs.
The humble beginnings of REAL in 1989 shaped its enduring philosophy—to adapt, to empower, and to evolve with communities. What started in one village would eventually grow into a multi-district movement, but its origins remain firmly grounded in the belief that meaningful change begins at the grassroots.
Our Origins (The Narrative)
Rooted in Reality, Driven by Justice. Established in 1989, Rural Education and Action for Liberation (REAL) began as a youth-led movement in Ennayiram Village, Villupuram. Founded by Mr. A. Lawrence, the organization emerged from a deep desire to free marginalized rural communities from the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and social suppression.
Over three decades later, REAL has evolved into a leading humanitarian organization in South India. While our reach has expanded, our core philosophy remains unchanged: Development cannot be given; it must be achieved through empowerment.
